This was Pope John Paul II’s second brush with royalty on Day One having already been greeted at Gatwick Airport by the Duke of Norfolk.
After lunch at Archbishop’s House, Westminster, the Pope travelled the short distance to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen. The private meeting lasted about half-an-hour.
